1. SpongeBob SquarePants

SpongeBob SquarePants is the main character of the cartoon.

He is a yellow sea sponge who lives in a pineapple-shaped house in Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob is cheerful, energetic and almost always excited about whatever he is doing.

He works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab, where he prepares the famous Krabby Patty.

SpongeBob loves his job, catching jellyfish and spending time with Patrick. He also attends boating school because he desperately wants a driving licence, although passing the driving test is one of his biggest challenges.

His optimism sometimes annoys other characters, especially Squidward, but SpongeBob rarely stays unhappy for long.

2. Patrick Star

Patrick Star is SpongeBob’s best friend.

He is a pink starfish who lives under a large rock close to SpongeBob’s home.

Patrick is relaxed, funny and not particularly clever. He often gives SpongeBob advice that sounds confident but makes very little sense.

The two friends enjoy jellyfishing, playing games and going on ridiculous adventures together.

Patrick’s strange ideas frequently create problems, but his friendship with SpongeBob remains one of the most important parts of the series.

3. Squidward Tentacles

Squidward Tentacles is SpongeBob’s neighbour and co-worker.

He lives between SpongeBob and Patrick in a house shaped like an Easter Island head.

Squidward works as the cashier at the Krusty Krab and usually dislikes his job. He loves art and playing the clarinet and considers himself far more talented than the people around him.

SpongeBob genuinely likes Squidward, but Squidward often finds SpongeBob’s constant enthusiasm exhausting.

Despite his complaints, Squidward occasionally shows that he does care about SpongeBob.

4. Sandy Cheeks

Sandy Cheeks is a squirrel from Texas who lives underwater in Bikini Bottom.

Because she cannot breathe underwater naturally, Sandy wears a special diving suit and helmet when she leaves her air-filled home.

She is intelligent, adventurous and extremely skilled in science.

Sandy also loves karate and regularly practises with SpongeBob.

Her combination of scientific knowledge, confidence and physical strength makes her one of SpongeBob’s most capable friends.

5. Eugene H. Krabs – Mr. Krabs

Mr. Krabs is the owner of the Krusty Krab.

He is a red crab who loves money and is always looking for ways to make more of it.

Mr. Krabs considers the Krabby Patty secret formula one of his most valuable possessions and spends a great deal of time protecting it from Plankton.

Although he can be extremely greedy, Mr. Krabs cares about his daughter Pearl and sometimes treats SpongeBob almost like part of his family.

6. Sheldon J. Plankton

Plankton is one of the main recurring villains in the series.

He owns the Chum Bucket, a restaurant located across the road from the Krusty Krab.

Plankton’s biggest dream is to steal the Krabby Patty secret formula and make his own restaurant successful.

He creates robots, disguises and complicated inventions to get the formula, but his plans usually fail.

Despite his tiny size, Plankton has an enormous ego and believes he can eventually defeat Mr. Krabs.

7. Karen Plankton

Karen is Plankton’s computer wife.

She is highly intelligent and regularly helps Plankton create plans for stealing the secret formula.

Karen is often more practical than her husband and quickly notices the weaknesses in his ideas.

She also enjoys making sarcastic comments when Plankton’s plans fail.

8. Gary the Snail

Gary is SpongeBob’s pet sea snail.

He behaves much like a house cat and communicates mainly by making “meow” sounds.

Gary is quiet, intelligent and often seems more sensible than SpongeBob.

SpongeBob loves him deeply and treats him as a member of the family.

9. Mrs. Puff

Mrs. Puff is SpongeBob’s boating-school teacher.

She tries to teach SpongeBob how to drive a boatmobile safely.

Unfortunately, SpongeBob becomes nervous during driving tests and frequently causes accidents.

Mrs. Puff therefore becomes terrified whenever she has to sit beside him during another test.

Despite everything, she continues trying to teach him.

10. Pearl Krabs

Pearl Krabs is Mr. Krabs’ teenage daughter.

Unlike her crab father, Pearl is a whale.

She is interested in fashion, music, shopping and spending time with her friends.

Pearl often becomes embarrassed by Mr. Krabs, especially when his love of saving money affects her social life.

11. Larry the Lobster

Larry the Lobster is one of Bikini Bottom’s strongest and most athletic residents.

He is often seen working as a lifeguard or exercising at the beach.

Larry enjoys sports, fitness and showing off his strength.

He is friendly with SpongeBob and Sandy and appears in many beach-related episodes.

12. Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy

Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy are elderly superheroes admired by SpongeBob and Patrick.

They once protected Bikini Bottom from villains and still occasionally return to action.

SpongeBob is a huge fan and becomes extremely excited whenever he gets the chance to meet them.

Other Popular SpongeBob Characters

Several additional characters regularly appear in Bikini Bottom:

  • Flying Dutchman – a green ghost pirate who scares residents of the ocean.
  • Bubble Bass – a demanding customer who often argues with SpongeBob.

  • Old Man Jenkins – an elderly resident who appears in many different situations.

  • SquarePants – SpongeBob’s mother.
  • Harold SquarePants – SpongeBob’s father.

Why SpongeBob SquarePants Characters Are So Memorable

The world of Bikini Bottom works because its characters are completely different from one another. SpongeBob is endlessly cheerful, Patrick is wonderfully clueless, Squidward is irritated by almost everything, Sandy loves science and adventure, and Mr. Krabs thinks constantly about money.

Plankton brings rivalry, Gary adds quiet humour, and Mrs. Puff turns SpongeBob’s attempts to learn driving into some of the series’ funniest moments.

Together, these characters create a cartoon world filled with friendship, comedy, strange adventures, underwater jobs and unforgettable personalities.
