Set in the fictional city of Agrabah, the story mixes romance, comedy, magic and danger as Aladdin discovers that being honest about who he is matters more than pretending to be someone else.
The animated world of Aladdin includes familiar characters such as Princess Jasmine, Genie, Abu, Jafar, Iago and the Sultan. Later animated films and the Aladdin television series introduced several more villains, allies and magical creatures.

1. Aladdin
Aladdin is the main character of the story.
He begins as a poor young man living on the streets of Agrabah with his monkey, Abu. Aladdin survives by stealing food, but he is also kind-hearted and often helps people who have even less than he does.
His life changes when Jafar tricks him into entering the Cave of Wonders to retrieve a magical lamp.
After releasing the Genie, Aladdin wishes to become a prince so that he can impress Princess Jasmine.
Although Aladdin is brave and clever, much of his journey involves learning that pretending to be someone else creates more problems than it solves.
2. Princess Jasmine
Princess Jasmine is the daughter of the Sultan and the princess of Agrabah.
She is intelligent, independent and unwilling to marry someone simply because palace tradition tells her to.
Jasmine becomes frustrated with being treated as though she has no control over her own future. She eventually leaves the palace disguised as an ordinary citizen, where she meets Aladdin.
She quickly proves that she is not a helpless princess. Jasmine is brave, outspoken and willing to challenge both her father and dangerous villains.
3. Genie
Genie is the magical character who lives inside Aladdin’s lamp.
He can change shape, create objects and perform extraordinary magic. Whoever owns the lamp becomes his master and receives three wishes, although certain magical rules still apply.
Genie is energetic, funny and constantly changes his appearance while telling jokes.
Behind the comedy, however, Genie has one major dream of his own: freedom.
His friendship with Aladdin becomes one of the most important relationships in the story.
4. Abu
Abu is Aladdin’s small monkey companion.
He is clever, mischievous and especially attracted to treasure, gold and valuable objects.
Abu’s love of shiny things sometimes causes major trouble. His decision to touch forbidden treasure inside the Cave of Wonders nearly traps everyone inside.
Despite his greed, Abu is extremely loyal to Aladdin and regularly risks himself to help his friend.
5. Magic Carpet
The Magic Carpet, often simply called Carpet, is a flying carpet with a personality of its own.
Carpet cannot speak but communicates through movements and gestures.
Aladdin discovers Carpet inside the Cave of Wonders, and it soon becomes one of his closest companions.
The famous flight through the night sky with Aladdin and Jasmine is one of the best-known scenes in the animated film.
6. Jafar
Jafar is the main villain of the original Aladdin film.
He serves as the Sultan’s royal adviser but secretly wants to take control of Agrabah.
Jafar is intelligent, manipulative and obsessed with magical power. He searches for the lamp because he knows the Genie can help him achieve his ambitions.
His magical abilities become increasingly dangerous as the story progresses.
Jafar later returns as a major villain in The Return of Jafar.
7. Iago
Iago is Jafar’s loud and sarcastic parrot.
He pretends to behave like an ordinary bird around the Sultan but can actually speak clearly.
Iago is greedy, impatient and often complains about Jafar’s plans.
Although he begins as a villain, his role changes in later stories. He eventually separates from Jafar and becomes connected with Aladdin and his friends.
8. The Sultan
The Sultan is Princess Jasmine’s father and the ruler of Agrabah.
He is cheerful, friendly and deeply loves his daughter.
However, he is also concerned about royal traditions and initially insists that Jasmine must marry a prince.
The Sultan can be too trusting, which allows Jafar to manipulate him for a long time.
Despite this, his main concern is Jasmine’s happiness and the future of Agrabah.
9. Rajah
Rajah is Jasmine’s large pet tiger.
He is affectionate with Jasmine but extremely suspicious of people he does not trust.
Rajah is especially protective whenever one of Jasmine’s unwanted suitors behaves badly.
Although he cannot speak, his expressions clearly show his opinions about the people around him.
10. Razoul
Razoul is the captain of the palace guards.
He is responsible for maintaining order in Agrabah and frequently chases Aladdin during his days as a street thief.
Razoul takes his duties seriously and can be suspicious of Aladdin even after his circumstances change.
He appears in the original film and later animated adventures.
11. Cassim
Cassim is Aladdin’s father and becomes an important character in Aladdin and the King of Thieves.
For many years, Aladdin believes his father is gone.
Cassim is eventually revealed to be connected with the legendary Forty Thieves and their search for valuable treasures.
His reunion with Aladdin adds a family storyline to the wider Aladdin universe.
12. Sa’luk
Sa’luk is a major villain in Aladdin and the King of Thieves.
He is one of the Forty Thieves and strongly opposes Cassim’s leadership.
Sa’luk is physically powerful, aggressive and determined to gain control of the thieves for himself.
Unlike Jafar, who relies heavily on magic and manipulation, Sa’luk is mainly a dangerous physical opponent.
