1. Dexter
Dexter is the main character of Dexter’s Laboratory.
He is a short, highly intelligent boy with orange hair, thick glasses, a white laboratory coat and black boots. Although he is still a child, Dexter can build robots, spaceships, time machines and many other inventions that would challenge professional scientists.
His enormous laboratory is hidden inside his family’s home. Surprisingly, Dexter’s parents remain mostly unaware of what their son is doing.
Dexter is extremely proud of his intelligence and sometimes believes he can solve every problem through science. Unfortunately, his confidence can make him careless.
His experiments frequently go wrong, especially after Dee Dee enters the laboratory and begins pressing buttons.
2. Dee Dee
Dee Dee is Dexter’s older sister and the person most capable of destroying his carefully planned experiments.
She is cheerful, energetic and fascinated by everything inside Dexter’s laboratory. Dee Dee loves dancing and frequently imagines herself as a ballerina.
Dexter constantly tries to stop her from entering his lab, but she always seems to find a way inside.
One of her most famous habits is pressing mysterious buttons simply because she wants to know what they do.
Although Dexter and Dee Dee argue constantly, they care about each other and occasionally work together when serious trouble appears.
3. Mom
Mom is Dexter and Dee Dee’s mother.
She is usually shown wearing gloves and keeping the family home extremely clean. Cleaning and organizing seem to be among her favourite activities.
Despite living in the same house as Dexter’s enormous laboratory, she generally has no idea that it exists.
Mom cares deeply about her children but sometimes becomes frustrated by the strange problems they create around the house.
4. Dad
Dad is Dexter and Dee Dee’s cheerful father.
He is often shown as playful, enthusiastic and sometimes even more childish than his children.
Dad becomes extremely excited about food, television and family activities. His behaviour can create some of the funniest moments outside Dexter’s laboratory.
Like Mom, he remains largely unaware of Dexter’s secret scientific world.
5. Mandark
Mandark is Dexter’s greatest scientific rival.
He is another child genius and is often just as intelligent as Dexter. Mandark builds his own advanced laboratory and constantly tries to prove that he is the better scientist.
Unlike Dexter, Mandark often uses his inventions for selfish or destructive purposes.
His rivalry with Dexter leads to competitions involving robots, scientific experiments and enormous machines.
Mandark is also famous for his unusual laugh, which makes him one of the most recognizable villains in the series.
6. Susan Astronomonov
One of the funniest facts about Mandark is that his real name is Susan Astronomonov.
He dislikes being called Susan and prefers the far more dramatic name Mandark.
His unusual childhood and relationship with his parents are explored in some episodes, showing how he developed his intense personality and obsession with science.
Mandark also has a strong crush on Dee Dee, something Dexter finds especially irritating.
7. Monkey
Monkey is Dexter’s laboratory monkey.
Dexter performs experiments on Monkey because he believes the animal is simply an ordinary test subject.
What Dexter does not realize for a long time is that Monkey secretly possesses extraordinary powers.
When danger appears, Monkey becomes a superhero and goes on missions to protect the world.
His secret identity creates a funny situation because Dexter, despite being a genius, often fails to recognize just how special his own laboratory animal is.
8. Agent Honeydew
Agent Honeydew is Monkey’s secret-agent partner.
She works alongside him on dangerous missions and helps fight villains threatening the world.
Agent Honeydew appears mainly in the Dial M for Monkey segments of the series.
She is intelligent, confident and highly capable, making her an important member of Monkey’s superhero adventures.
9. Major Glory
Major Glory is one of the major superheroes appearing in Dexter’s world.
He is patriotic, dramatic and extremely confident in his heroic abilities.
Major Glory belongs to a superhero team known as the Justice Friends, who appear in their own segments within Dexter’s Laboratory.
He often tries to behave like the responsible leader of the group, although his superhero life can become just as chaotic as Dexter’s experiments.
10. Valhallen
Valhallen is another member of the Justice Friends.
He is a muscular superhero who strongly resembles a rock musician and carries a magical guitar.
Valhallen loves music and frequently talks or behaves like a heavy-metal performer.
His combination of superhero strength and rock-star personality makes him one of the strangest characters connected with Dexter’s world.
11. The Infraggable Krunk
The Infraggable Krunk is the third major member of the Justice Friends.
Krunk is huge, extremely strong and purple.
Despite his intimidating appearance, he often behaves like an innocent child. He can become emotional over simple problems and does not always understand complicated situations.
This contrast between enormous strength and childlike behaviour creates much of his comedy.
12. Douglas E. Mordecai III
Douglas E. Mordecai III is one of Dexter’s school friends.
Like Dexter, Douglas is interested in science and technology, although he is not usually shown as being as brilliant.
He sometimes joins Dexter in school-related adventures and experiments.
Douglas represents one of the few children Dexter can talk to about scientific subjects without immediately becoming annoyed.
13. Mee Mee
Mee Mee is one of Dee Dee’s closest friends.
She frequently visits Dee Dee and joins her during games, dancing and other activities.
Mee Mee shares Dee Dee’s energetic personality and contributes to the noisy, colourful world that Dexter often finds distracting.
14. Lee Lee
Lee Lee is another of Dee Dee’s close friends.
Together with Dee Dee and Mee Mee, she forms a small friendship group that regularly appears in episodes.
The three girls enjoy dancing, playing and having fun—activities that Dexter considers far less important than science.
Other Popular Dexter’s Laboratory Characters
Several additional characters appear throughout the series:
- Computer – the intelligent computer system controlling Dexter’s laboratory.
- Quackor – Mandark’s pet duck, who becomes connected with Monkey.
- Windbear and Oceanbird – Mandark’s unusual parents.
- Koosalagoopagoop – Dee Dee’s imaginary friend, often called Koosy.
- Action Hank – an action hero greatly admired by Dexter.
- Pony Puff Princess – a television character loved by Dee Dee.
- Dexter’s Robots – various machines created to assist Dexter with experiments and everyday tasks.
Dexter and Dee Dee’s Rivalry
Much of the cartoon’s comedy comes from the relationship between Dexter and Dee Dee.
Dexter represents logic, planning and science. Dee Dee represents curiosity, imagination and complete unpredictability.
Dexter builds complicated machines that may take weeks of planning. Dee Dee can destroy them simply by pressing one button.
However, their relationship is not completely hostile. When one of them faces real danger, the other often tries to help.
Their constant arguments hide the fact that they share a strong brother-and-sister bond.
Why Dexter Cartoon Characters Are So Memorable
Dexter’s Laboratory works because its characters have completely different personalities. Dexter wants order and scientific perfection, while Dee Dee brings chaos wherever she goes. Mandark turns science into competition, and Mom and Dad add family comedy without realizing what is happening beneath their own roof.
Characters such as Monkey, Major Glory, Valhallen and Krunk expand the cartoon into the world of superheroes and secret missions.
Together, Dexter, Dee Dee, Mandark and the rest of the characters create a cartoon filled with science, sibling rivalry, inventions, superheroes and hilarious experiments that rarely go according to plan.
