Top 5 Highest Potato Producing States in India

There are a lot of crops in which India just leads the charts on a global stage, and that seems to be the case with potato production as well. Like, we’re the 2nd largest potato producer in the entire world, just falling short of China. And that’s just possible because potatoes are being produced or grown in literally every part of the country. But out of all the states, there certainly are some states that produce a HUGE amount of potatoes every single year, and with this list of the Top 5 Highest Potato Producing States in India 2025, we’ll talk about just that. Here we go.

Potato Producing

1. Uttar Pradesh

At the very top of the list (and by a very large margin), it is still the state of Uttar Pradesh, which is not even surprising anymore. The biggest surprise, however, is that Uttar Pradesh is responsible for almost 33% of the total potato production in the country of India, and the production is expected to reach 15.9 million tonnes, which is an amazing figure. What really gives the state an edge? Well, it’s the flat Indo-Gangetic plains that come with rich, deep alluvial soil and dependable canal irrigation. Places such as Agra and Farrukhabad are not only growing potatoes but also preparing for the future with cold storage clusters that make it possible for the farmers to store their produce and sell it at a convenient time. This is not being done by any other state to such an extent.

2. West Bengal

West Bengal is still in second place with no change. It is notable for its 12.6 million tonnes of production. However, this state has something very different from other states in the list. In contrast to the expansive plain lands of UP, the reason behind Bengal’s love for potatoes is the silt-enriched Ganges delta, you know, a land of pure natural fertility which is also perfect for seed potato multiplication. The districts of Hooghly and Bardhaman are at the very front of the movement. Moreover, being close to Kolkata and having infrastructure suitable for exports, West Bengal’s potatoes have started to enter not only the Indian but also the Southeast Asian food markets.

3. Bihar

At third position, Bihar is going up the ladder not with traditional farming, but with intelligent agricultural decisions. The state of Bihar has surpassed the 9.1 million tonnes ceiling in 2025 by regular use of disease-free seeds, implementing micro-irrigation, and using mechanized planters. Being situated within the Indo-Gangetic plain area, Bihar had the advantage of its soil, which, after every monsoon, was naturally renewed with loamy soil. However, it is the districts of Nalanda and Purnia that have gone ahead in the cultivation of potatoes in Bihar. This has been made possible partly by these two districts employing the high-density plantation techniques.

4. Gujarat

It is possible that this one might a little bit shock some of you: Gujarat, which is a state that is usually associated with its semi-arid terrain rather than with crops such as potatoes, is ranked in the fourth place. So what makes it capable of producing such a huge quantity of almost 3.8 million tonnes per annum? The answer is simply innovation. The state of Gujarat has flipped its climate challenge to a success story with the help of technologies ranging from drip irrigation in Banaskantha to market delivery systems that run around the clock, cold chains for cooperatives, and much more.

5. Madhya Pradesh

Rounding off our listing at number five is Madhya Pradesh, having an annual production of about 3.6 million tonnes. The diversity of the soils (black, red-yellow, and alluvial) that are spread all over the central plateau of MP really gives the state a special character. But that is not all that gives the state the edge: it also has two planting windows. Because of the Narmada River running between the Vindhya and Satpura ranges, farmers in MP are able to plant twice, once with leftover monsoon moisture and once with irrigated water.

Conclusion

That’s all there is for now. See, with potato production, we can go on and on with this list, but for the sake of keeping it short and super informative, we have listed these highest potato-producing states as of 2025.
