About Ambareesh

Ambareesh was a celebrated Indian actor and public representative known mainly for his contribution to Kannada cinema. His birth name was Malavalli Huchche Gowda Amarnath. He was born to Hucchegowda and Padmamma and spent his early years in Mandya district.

He completed his schooling in Mandya before moving to Mysore for higher education. His entry into cinema began when director Puttanna Kanagal selected him for a role in the Kannada film Naagarahaavu, released in 1972.

Ambareesh gradually established himself as a leading actor through his strong screen presence and memorable performances. He became widely known as the “Rebel Star” and “Mandyada Gandu.” These popular titles reflected his connection with cinema audiences and the people of Mandya.

During his extensive acting career, Ambareesh appeared in more than 200 films. His notable movies include Antha, Ranganayaki, Chakravyuha, Masanada Hoovu, Olavina Udugore, Hrudaya Haadithu, Mannina Doni and Odahuttidavaru.

He received several honours for his contribution to cinema. These included Karnataka State Film Awards, the NTR National Award, the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award – South and the Dr Vishnuvardhan Award. Karnatak University also presented him with an honorary doctorate.

Ambareesh also served the public through politics. He represented Mandya in the Lok Sabha for three terms and served as the Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting. He later served as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and as the state’s Minister of Housing.

Sumalatha is an Indian actress and public representative who has worked in Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi cinema. She began her acting career at a young age and became one of the familiar personalities of South Indian cinema during the 1980s and 1990s.

She has appeared in more than 200 films across different languages. Her ability to perform in varied roles helped her build a successful career in several regional film industries.

Sumalatha’s notable movies include New Delhi, Thoovanathumbikal, Isabella, Nirakkoottu, Shrutilayalu, Aahuti, Avatara Purusha and Kallarali Hoovagi. She received the Nandi Award for Best Actress for her performance in Shrutilayalu.

Ambareesh and Sumalatha first met while working on the Kannada film Aahuti. They later appeared together in several films, including New Delhi, Avatara Purusha and Kallarali Hoovagi. The couple welcomed their son, Abhishek Ambareesh, who later became a Kannada film actor.

Sumalatha also entered public service and represented Mandya in the Lok Sabha from 2019 to 2024. Thus, Ambareesh was exactly 11 years, 2 months and 29 days older than Sumalatha.
