Traditional Dress of Women in Uttar Pradesh
1. Sarees
Not a single doubt in the fact, just like many other northern states, the saree remains the favorite outfit for women everywhere in UP. In rural areas, it is ingrained in the everyday lifestyle, pretty much, whereas in urban areas, it is used for work, functions, and festivals. And if we talk about UP sarees, the Banarasi saree is always the one that gets highlighted.
Banarasi sarees, which come from Varanasi, are basically pure silk woven and ornamented with either gold or silver zari work. And? Well, most of the time, the peacock, floral, and paisley are the patterns that you will find on them.
On normal days majority of women, particularly during summer, opt for light cotton sarees that are breathable and comfortable in the hot UP climate.
2. Chikankari
Just so you know, Chikankari is amongst the most classy and stylish of the handicrafts of Uttar Pradesh. The craft is a hand embroidery from Lucknow that is mainly done on soft fabrics like muslin and cotton. Sure enough, the pretty floral and leafy patterns are the reason it looks like a royal without being too heavy. Chikankari is a tradition that can be seen on shirts, sarees, dupattas, and many other things.
3. Salwar Kameez
Really? Yes, right here in UP as well, salwar kameez is the most common dress in towns and cities. The outfit mainly comprises a kameez, a salwar or churidar, and a dupatta. Women of UP generally add some elements like Chikankari or tiny mirror work to make it more ethnic. It is quite comfortable, one can easily move around in it, and it is perfect for the office, college, or grocery shopping.
4. Ghagra Choli
It is true that the ghagra choli is a fashionable and popular attire of the women of UP, especially during fairs and festivals. Ghagra is the long skirt, choli is the fitted blouse, and the outfit is complemented by a dupatta or odhni. Plain and simple!
5. Lehenga with Odhni
Just so you know, a lehenga is basically a ghagra but with more weight and intricate details. Generally, it is a part of the wedding or big event attire. A lot of times, brides from UP are spotted in red or maroon lehengas embroidered with gold in a heavy way.
6. Accessories for Women
The traditional accessories are a gold or silver necklace, jhumkas, bangles, anklets, and nose rings.
Traditional Dress of Men in Uttar Pradesh
1. Dhoti-Kurta
In a lot of villages in UP, the dhoti-kurta remains the traditional clothing, just like many other states in India. A dhoti made of cotton is comfortably wrapped, and a kurta is put on. It is not only a very good summer wear as it keeps you cool, but also looks very simple and elegant.
2. Kurta-Pajama
Again, kurta-pajama remains a popular choice throughout the state. The casual daily wear is made from cotton or linen, whereas the festive garments made from silk or brocade are kept for celebrations and weddings. The outfit is a perfect match for anyone and is timeless, we must say that.
3. Sherwani and Achkan
Oh, it’s not an everyday wear, but yes, sherwanis are considered appropriate attire for weddings and other grand celebrations. They can be described as long, coat-style kurtas typically made of luxurious materials such as silk or velvet. Achkan is a close variant but with a little shorter length, equally classy.
4. Angarkha
An angarkha is a garment with an overlapping front that is usually tied at the side. And? Well, it was definitely the attire of the haughty and the aristocratic ones.
5. Lungi with Kurta
Yes, in a lot of rural areas of UP, men choose to wear the lungi when the weather is hot. It is well-ventilated, comfortable, and quite handy.
6. Accessories for Men
Generally, men have minimal accessories in UP. Like, a pagri (turban) or a white topi reflects the respect and provides cover from the sun. That’s all!
