Top 10 Largest Oilseed Producing States in India

India is the world’s largest oilseed producer, cultivating crops such as soybeans, groundnuts, rapeseed, mustard, sunflowers, sesame, castor, safflower, and linseed. All these crops are grown across diverse agroclimatic zones. With the vast production of various types of oilseeds, India not only fulfills its domestic demands but also exports to many other countries.

Being an undisputed leader in oilseed production, the Indian government has started offering subsidies and better schemes to teach farmers less water-intensive techniques for smart farming. Every state in India has a different way of promoting farming, and the numbers about production help in many ways. Learning about the production numbers in every state helps agriculture businesses, traders, processors, and policy makers to plan procurement, logistics, and capacity expansion.

Largest Oilseed Producing States

Here is the List of Top 10 Largest Oilseed Producing States in India 2025

To make this list, we are using the latest official data points available. We are taking the first three spots from The Economic Survey 2024-2025, as the data is the latest. To find the rest positions in the list, we are relying on the state-wise total oilseed table released by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics for the year 2020-2021. As there is no clear data available, the numbers might vary slightly, with 4 to 10 positions in the list. Let’s get started:

1. Rajasthan

Rajasthan is a state full of history, warriors, and spices. However, Rajasthan is also an undisputed leader when it comes to the total oilseed production. In the year 2023-2024, the total production of oilseed was 9.37 million tonnes (23.6%), which is almost a quarter of the total production in India.   Mustard and Rapeseed are Rajasthan’s strength, as a wide margin came from these two varieties.  Groundnut is important along the western belt, and soybean acreage has expanded in select districts. The state’s performance benefited from good Rabi weather and strong mustard yields in recent years.

2. Madhya Pradesh

With the production of 8.58 million tonnes, MP ranked second in the country for oilseed production with a 21.62% share. Madhya Pradesh is known for being the soybean capital, and MP leads in soy production with huge margins. Rapeseed and mustard have a major contribution from the north-west districts of MP; meanwhile, groundnut is more localized in most regions of this state. The state’s soybean leadership is also reflected in specialist and news summaries, but the Economic Survey remains the most authoritative citation for 2023-24.

3. Gujrat

Gujarat holds the third position with 18.35% share in the total oilseed production, making 7.28 million tonnes. Gujarat is a popular state for textiles, trading, spices, and exports around the globe. Groundnut is the strength of Gujarat, followed by heavyweight castor. Coastal Saurashtra and north Gujarat have high yields when it comes to the production of groundnuts. These numbers came from the economic survey 2024-2025.

4. Maharashtra

A top state in the production of oilseeds, Maharashtra has been an asset from the regions of Vidarbha and Marathwada. Maharashtra grows many types of oilseeds, groundnut, and safflower, which contribute to supporting the state-wise total production, and the overall yield was 6.69 million tonnes.  In the betterment of farmers, market interventions and MSP operations periodically support farmers’ realisations in weak price years, which helps sustain acreage.

5. Haryana

Haryana is a top producer of Rapeseed and Mustard during the Rabi season, which is usually backed by agriculture and a strong extension network. The state-wise production during 2020-2021 was about 1.31 million tonnes of the total oilseed production. Undoubtedly, Haryana’s mustard production marks the country’s best for the last several years. With the majority of oilseed coming from rapeseed and mustard, Haryana ranks in fifth position due to the huge production of only these two varieties.

6. Uttar Pradesh

By land area, population of farmers, and government-backed schemes, Uttar Pradesh has many such advantages in the farming sector. UP marks sixth position in the list, again with rapeseed and mustard. In the year 2020-2021, UP recorded 1.26 million tonnes of total oilseed production, with steady numbers in the year 2023-2024.

7. Karnataka

Going down on India’s map, we can notice diversity when it comes to oilseed production. In the Karnataka region, groundnut, sunflower, and soybean are the priority among most farmers for the geographical regions. With the production of 1.20 million tonnes of oilseed, majorly dominated by groundnut cultivation, Karnataka takes eighth place. Even sunflowers have contributed a significant amount to making this top oilseed-producing state.

8. West Bengal

In West Bengal, oilseeds are not as dominant as cereal crops, but rapeseed and mustard grown during the Rabi season help the state maintain a steady place among the top 10. In the year 2020-21, it recorded 1.17 million tonnes of oilseeds production with a major contribution from mustard and rapeseed. The government’s continuous focus on improving mustard cultivation is expected to further boost productivity.

9. Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu’s contribution comes mainly from groundnut grown in rainfed areas. Secondly, sesame cultivation in specific districts has also contributed toward making it a top oilseed-producing state. The state produced about 0.99 million tonnes of oilseeds in 2020-21. Although Tamil Nadu is not the top producer of any one oilseed nationally, its diverse farming system and high-value agriculture help ensure consistent oilseed output.

10. Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh oilseed production mainly comes from groundnut and sesame, while sunflower and castor are also grown in certain pockets, even though it is on a smaller scale. The Rayalaseema region (districts like Anantapur, Kurnool, and Kadapa) is the heartland of groundnut cultivation. In the region, Anantapur alone accounts for a large share of the state’s output.

Notable Mention: Telangana is very close to the top 10, with a production of about 0.58 million tonnes in 2020-21. The state has shown steady growth in groundnut and sesame, and with better seasons, it could move up in rankings.

Final Words

If you are a buyer, processor, or analyst, anchoring the assumptions based on the top three oilseed-producing states will help plan procurement for 2025. Rajasthan for Mustard/Rapeseed, Madhya Pradesh for Soybean, and Gujarat for volume can help in making the right decision during any planning. However, if you are interested in learning about the production of oilseed in different states, then we hope this was a fun and informative read for you.
