Top 5 Highest Crude Oil Producing States in India

See, so far, we do not have some massive oil reserves found right here in India, and that is pretty much the reason why we aren’t counted among the largest crude oil producers in the world. But the thing is, there is some crude oil being produced in India as well, albeit on a very small scale. Like, less than 30 million metric tons of crude oil being produced every single year. And if you dive deep, you’ll find that there are only a few states that majorly contribute to this number, and today, with this list of the Top 5 Highest Crude Oil Producing States in India 2025, we’ll take a good look at just that.

Crude Oil Producing

1. Rajasthan

As the first, Rajasthan is still on top of the list, and no one would be even slightly shocked to know this because this has been going on for quite a while now. More than 5 million tons of crude oil were produced in this state during 2023-24, with the Barmer Basin’s Mangala, Bhagyam, and Aishwariya oilfields being the major contributors. The Barmer fields are generating close to 200,000 barrels of oil per day, and it is believed that the reserves here will exceed 1 billion barrels, thus, the largest onshore oil discovery in India over the last few years.

2. Gujarat

It wasn’t even on the map when other states started to become popular in the oil business, but Gujarat had already made its way through the pipes, in a very literal sense. Keeping a steady production of about 4.8 million tonnes in 2023-24, Gujarat is still in the second position in the ranking. The majority of oil is sourced from aging onshore areas of the Cambay-Khambhat region, along with local oil production centers such as Ankleshwar, Kalol, and Khambhat. And when we specifically talk about the onshore oil production, well, Gujarat is a big name in that segment, like accounting for more than 55% of the total onshore crude production in the country. That’s massive.

3. Assam

Well, to be honest, Assam’s crude oil scene is more than a century old. Assam is the third with a contribution of over 4.36 million tonnes in 2023-24. The first ever site was established at Digboi, you know, which quite literally is the oldest oilfield in Asia that is still in operation. However, the major work is currently being done at the bigger fields in Duliajan, Naharkatiya, and Moran. Actually, the state is nowadays investing money in new oil wells, which are super new, indicating a more active role in oil production.

4. Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu, ranked fourth, might not have been making numbers of massive volumes of production (barely 0.3 million tonnes was its output last year), but it was getting noticed in several other aspects. The majority of oil is sourced from the Cauvery Basin region, Kuthalam area, and the southeastern coast, is the place where most oil is extracted. What is so special? The state of Tamil Nadu is home to the first pilot plant for helium extraction in India, which indicates that new ideas are not only in the big-volume states. Nevertheless, the development of the next drilling can still be controlled by strict measures related to the farming activities implemented in the Cauvery Delta, which is recognized as a Protected Special Agricultural Zone.

5. Andhra Pradesh

Finishing off this list, and just for the sake of a Top-5 list, let’s talk about Andhra Pradesh as well, which comes at the final spot of this list with the production of crude oil of about 0.25 million tonnes, which is the smallest number on this list. We get it, that is super low, nevertheless, the state is a hub for the oil industry offshore because of the Ravva field in the Krishna-Godavari (KG) Basin, so it shouldn’t be underestimated. Besides that, fresh deepwater blocks in the KG area are indicating a good yield, largely as gas and condensate, but also adding to the state’s crude figures.

Conclusion

There you have it. If crude oil production is what we’re talking about, these are the highest oil-producing states in the country right now. And this will likely remain the same for the coming few years or even decades until we find some massive oil reserves in some other parts of the country.
