List Of Congress Ruling States In India

It has been a long time since India has seen Congress forming the center government in India, in the Lok Sabha election 2024, they lost for the third consecutive time. But that doesn’t mean they’re completely out of power; in actuality, they’re ruling in a few states right here in India, but talking about Congress specifically, they’re in an absolute majority in just three states as of 2026. And with today’s list of Congress Ruling States in India 2026, we’d like to talk a little about these three states one by one. Let’s just get to it then.

Congress

1. Karnataka (Congress Government)

Sure enough, when we talk about Congress, there is no way we can just skip past Karnataka, and it has been in power for a long time there. Once again, yes, the Congress party came to power here in May 2023, and since then, it has been able to continue holding the state government without major problems. The Congress government in Karnataka is headed by Siddaramaiah, who took charge for the second time as Chief Minister after a very convincing Assembly election victory. As of the beginning of 2026, the party is in its second term of almost two and a half years in power, making Karnataka one of the more stable Congress-ruled, at least the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌moment. One‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ of the reasons, in fact, that Karnataka ranks so high on this list is the state’s good economic performance. How? Oh, well, the state’s GSDP is estimated at about ₹25 trillion and hence it is one of the major economic engines of India. Though the ruling party has had internal leadership discussions since 2023, Karnataka has gone on smoothly under a Congress-led government, and this is the main reason why we have ranked it number ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌one.

2. Telangana (Congress Government)

And then, no doubt, Telangana,‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ a newly formed state, is at the second place and it is also one of the most politically watched Congress-ruled regions right now. Talking about something of very recent, in the 2023 Assembly elections, Congress came out with a clear majority, ending the previous government’s nearly 10 years of rule, which was a major political shift in Telangana. Here, the Congress government is led by A. Revanth Reddy, who took the oath of office in December 2023. And just so you know, by early 2026, this government completed just a little over two years of its tenure, and the state is still entirely under Congress’s ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌control. Telangana‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌, too, on the economic front, is doing reasonably well, having a GSDP of about ₹18 trillion and a high per capita income.

3. Himachal Pradesh (Congress Government)

Coming‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ in at number three is Himachal Pradesh, a state where the Congress managed to make a comeback just a little bit earlier than in the other two states mentioned. You see, to be precise here, the party came to power here after the 2022 Assembly elections, and since then, they have been able to retain their grip on the state even though the early days in power were politically turbulent. For now, like in 2026, the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh is under the leadership of Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who took over the reins in December 2022. Even‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ though the state was in a difficult situation due to by-elections and political instability, the Government under the leadership of Sukhu was able to get back its control, and Congress has strengthened its position in the Assembly. Himachal Pradesh may not be the largest state in terms of economy, but politically, it is still a stronghold of Congress in northern India.
