Top 5 Grapes Producing States in India

Looking at how much we love grapes in India, you must already be thinking that India has to be among the top-ranking nations when it comes to grape production, right? But according to the latest data, India is only the 7th largest grape producer in the entire world, which is not impressive, but it is still something. Though it is true that the grapes that are produced in India are enough to keep up with the demand that is always there in the country, and sure enough, there are some states that clearly contribute more than others. And today, we’re here to look at just that with this list of the Top 5 Grapes Producing States in India 2025. Let’s get going then.

Grapes Producing

1. Maharashtra

If you love grapes so much, then you must already know that a city in Maharashtra, which goes by the name Nasik, is known as the Grape Capital of India, right? Well, that’s actually true, and the title is well worth it because statistically speaking, it is much ahead in the quantity and quality game. And it is not like this state came out top out of nowhere, nah, Maharashtra has been at the top for quite some time, and in 2025, the state is still going strong, no doubt about that. Talking more specifically about the numbers, though, see, the season 2023-24 witnessed Maharashtra producing a little less than 2.48 million tonnes, which is more than 63% of the total grape output of India. Experts are already projecting the production to be around 2.55 million tonnes this ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌year. And just in case you’re wondering, well, ‍‌‍‌‍‍‌districts of Nashik, Sangli, Solapur, and Pune have an ideal combination of climate and soil that is the main reason why grapes such as Thompson Seedless, Sharad Seedless, and Sonaka are growing vigorously.

2. Karnataka

Another great contender in the list is surely Karnataka, and not just in the category of table grapes, but the wine grapes are super high quality, too. Going straight to the numbers, well, Karnataka has grown 1.22 million tonnes of grapes in 2023-24, which is almost 31% of the total grapes in the country. And, if we go by the estimates, well, the production volume will be around 1.26 million tonnes by 2025, as per the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌forecast. Other than that, going into more specific talk about the region, see, the‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ main grape-growing areas in the state are Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Koppal, and Belagavi, whereas the Nandi Hills region has been instrumental in Karnataka’s rise to become a nationally recognized producer of high-quality wine.

3. Andhra Pradesh

It’s‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ a fact that very few people are aware of, that Andhra Pradesh was not a major grape-producing state earlier, like a decade or two ago. But slowly yet steadily, the numbers are rising here, and no doubt, this state is on the level that we can very well rank it third in 2025 in terms of grape production. Being more specific about the numbers and production data here, well, the volume of production was close to 1.01 lakh tonnes in 2023-24 and is going to be nearly 1.10 lakh tonnes in 2025, as per the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌forecast. The main reasons? Oh, that would be areas like Anantapur, Kurnool, and Chittoor.

4. Tamil Nadu

From the very top spot to the end of this list, you must have seen a very steep decline in the production numbers, right? Well, that’s how it is, but still, Tamil Nadu ranks 4th today, and the production amount may be low, but still considerable. How much are we talking exactly? Oh, with a production close to 51,000 tonnes in 2023-24, Tamil Nadu is sitting pretty at the fourth position in our 2025 ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌rankings.

5. Telangana

Without a single doubt, like, Telangana‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ is probably the one state that has shocked everybody with its rapid climb. Just a couple of years back, no one would have thought of it as a grape-growing region. But, in 2023-24, the production of grapes in Telangana was close to 8,000 tonnes, and specialists are quite sure that this figure can be increased twofold by 2025, thus making it the fifth place on our ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌list.

Conclusion

That’s enough of the grapes talk in India, but if you’re a lover of this fruit, then you can keep on checking out some other varieties and specialties of grapes from other states as well, since there are many states that take part in grape cultivation right here in India. Good luck with that.
