51 Shakti Peeth List With States

In Sanatan Dharma, there is a really interesting story behind all 51 Shakti Peethas, and to give you a shooter version of it, see what happened was that Maa Sati actually went ahead her father’s will to marry Lord Shiva, but when her father, Daksha Prajapati, arranged and invited everyone in his yagna, except Lord Shiva and Maa Sati, but when Maa Sati came anyway, she asked her father some questions about there not being any invitations for them, then her father went on to intentionally humiliate Lord Shiva, and hearing that, Maa Sati immolated herself in that very yagna, and find out that out, Lord Shiva became too upset about it and started his Tandva. When all this was going on, to save the Earth, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to cut Sati’s body into 51 parts, which fell in different places in India. And today, we’re going to talk about all these 51 Shakti Peeth List With States.

1.​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Amarnath Shakti Peeth – Jammu & Kashmir

Amarnath Shakti Peeth - Jammu & Kashmir

Putting Amarnath first is what we just did because it is one of the most difficult and spiritually powerful Shakti Peeths that is pretty much out there. Sati’s throat is thought to have dropped in this place. The Goddess is worshipped as Maa Mahamaya, while Lord Shiva, who is called Trisandhyasvar Bhairav. It is a temple located amidst the snow-covered mountains of Anantnag, which holds tremendous significance during the yearly Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage.

2. Vishalakshi Shakti Peeth – Uttar Pradesh

This Peeth gains the second position because of its location in Varanasi, which is considered as THE spiritual capital of India. It is believed that Maa Sati’s earrings or face fell here. The Goddess is worshipped as Maa Vishalakshi, and Bhairav as Kaal Bhairav. Its nearness to Kashi Vishwanath Temple gives it a very high level of importance for the devotees of Devi.

3. Lalita Devi Shakti Peeth – Uttar Pradesh

Put 3rd because this place has a very close association with the holy Triveni Sangam, here was where the finger of Maa Sati was found. The Goddess here is Maa Lalita, and Bhairav is Bhairav Bhawan. It sees a great influx of devotees during large religious ceremonies held in ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌Prayagaraj.

4.​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Ramgiri (Maihar) Shakti Peeth – Madhya Pradesh

This Shakti Peeth is ranked at number four partly because of the great view it offers from a hilltop, which is a symbol of spiritual elevation. It is believed that the right breast of Maa Sati fell here. The Divine Mother is called Maa Shivani, and Bhairav as Chand Bhairav. Just the ropeway ride makes the worship experience more memorable and outright amazing.

5. Jwala Ji Shakti Peeth – Himachal Pradesh

 Jwala Ji is at number five mainly because the natural flame here is eternal and burns without any fuel whatsoever. The belief is that the tongue of Maa Sati dropped here. The Goddess here is Maa Jwala, and Bhairav is Unmatta Bhairav. No doubt, in the northern region of India, it is among the most potent Shakti centers.

6. Tripurmalini Shakti Peeth – Punjab

Then comes this Shakti Peeth, being the site of the fall of the left breast of Maa Sati, which has been given the sixth spot. The Divine Mother is worshipped as Maa Tripurmalini , and Bhairav is regarded as Bhishan. This one is situated down there in Jalandhar.

We have ranked this Peeth at number seven mainly due to its association with Kurukshetra overall, you know, the land where the Mahabharata was set. It is believed that Maa Sati’s ankle or palm fell here. The Goddess is Maa Savitri, and Bhairav is Ishwar.

8. Katyayani Shakti Peeth – Uttar Pradesh

And then, this very Peeth is placed eighth as it has a strong connection with Mathura, the city where Lord Krishna was born. It is said that Maa Sati’s hair dropped there. The Goddess is worshipped as Maa Katyayani, and Bhairav as Ruru.

9. Panch Sagar Shakti Peeth – Uttar Pradesh

Coming ninth, see, for the reason of being a relatively unknown yet potent shrine in Varanasi, this Peeth was placed ninth, and it commemorates the dropping of the lower teeth or jaw of Maa Sati. Here, the Goddess is called Maa Varahi, and Bhairav is ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌Maharudra.

10.​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Dakshayani Shakti Peeth – Tibet

It is the remote and high-altitude location near Mount Kailash that has impacted the ranking of this Peeth to the tenth spot. It is believed that the right palm of Maa Sati fell at this site. Here, the Goddess is Dakshayani, and Bhairav is Amar.

11. Shri Parvat Shakti Peeth – Jammu & Kashmir

At Anantnag, this Peeth is the one where the fall of Maa Sati’s right anklet is marked. The Goddess is Shri Sundari in this place, and Bhairav is Sundaranand.

12. Phullara (Attahas) Shakti Peeth – West Bengal

Phullara Shakti Peeth marks the spot where the lower lip of Maa Sati is believed to have fallen. The Goddess is Phullara and Bairav, Vishwesh. You can find it in ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌Birbhum.

13. Bahula Shakti Peeth – West Bengal

And then, ranked 13th, this temple is a symbol of the descent of the left arm of the dearest to the deepest heart. Here, the divine feminine or Goddess is Maa Bahula, and Bhairav is Bhiruk. Another special thing is that the shrine itself is situated close to the Ajay River.

14. Mahishmardini Shakti Peeth – West Bengal

Once again in the same state, this is the significant spot where a small part of the face between the eyebrows of the Maa Sati fell. The female deity here is identified as Maa Mahishmardini, and Bhairav is Vakranath.

15. Kankalitala Shakti Peeth – West Bengal

This one’s special too and we have listed this temple here as it is said that the bones of Maa Sati, or perhaps her waist, in this story, fell into this place. The divine mother here is identified as Maa Devgarbha, and the male deity//Bhairav is ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌Ruru.

16.​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Nandipur Shakti Peeth – West Bengal

The 16th Shakti Peeth on our list is a temple that most people outside Bengal are hardly aware of. You know, it is said that Nandipur Shakti Peeth is the spot where Goddess Sati’s necklace fell. The goddess here is worshipped as Maa Nandini, whereas Lord Shiva is known as Nandikeshwar.

17. Kumari (Ratnavali) Shakti Peeth – West Bengal

And then, the 17th place on our list has been taken by Kumari, which is also renowned as Ratnavali Shakti Peeth. This is the place where Sati’s right shoulder fell after Shiva’s cosmic dance, aka Tandav. She is worshipped as the pure and strong Maa Kumari.

18. Kapalini (Vibhash) Shakti Peeth – West Bengal

This one is one of the oldest found ones too, and as per the traditions, it is Sati’s left ankle that fell to this very location. The presiding deity is Maa Kapalini, and Bhairav is worshipped as Sarvananda.

Still, once again in the same state of India, coming in at number 19 is Mangal Chandika Shakti Peeth, and the legend has it that the right wrist of Maa Sati fell here. The deity of the place is worshipped as Maa Mangal Chandika, and Bhairav here is Kapilambar.

20. Bhramri Shakti Peeth – West Bengal

Bhramri Shakti Peeth is ranked number 20 mainly due to its pretty amazing location itself. The story goes that the left leg of Maa Sati fell in this spot. The deity here is worshipped as Ma Bhramri, while the Bhairav is worshipped as Ishwar.

21. Kalighat Shakti Peeth – West Bengal

At number 21 is one of the most renowned Shakti Peeths in India, Kalighat. And just so you know, the place where Maa Sati’s right toe fell is believed to be here. Celebrated as one of the oldest temples in the country, Kalighat, situated in Kolkata, still stands as a great spiritual ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌icon, even after centuries.

22.​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Kamakhya Shakti Peeth – Assam

Going down another spot, see, taking the 22nd place in the list, Shakti Peeth Kamakhya is the place where the womb of Maa Sati is said to have fallen. The goddess Kamakhya is the deity of creation and fertility. Besides being one of the major places of pilgrimage in Assam, the Kamakhya temple is also a significant center for Tantric practices in India.

23. Jayanti Shakti Peeth – Meghalaya

And then, position 23 in our list is taken by Jayanti Shakti Peeth, somewhat of a lesser-known but very important Shakti Peeth. The left thigh of the goddess Sati is supposed to have dropped at this spot. The goddess is worshipped as Jayanti and Bhairav as Kamadishwar.

24. Tripura Sundari Shakti Peeth – Tripura

Then, number 24 is reserved for Tripura Sundari Shakti Peeth, one of the most architecturally distinctive temples on this very list. Staying on the list of the Shakti Peethas, see, this is the site where the right foot of Goddess Sati is supposed to have fallen. Goddess Tripura Sundari is worshipped here, who is the symbol of beauty and harmony.

25.​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Biraja Shakti Peeth – Odisha

Comes next the Biraja Shakti Peeth, one of the oldest Shakti Peeths in Odisha, is ranked 25th. As per legend, it was here the navel of Maa Sati fell. Just so you know, here, the goddess is worshipped as Maa Biraja or Girija, while Bhairav is called Samvart.

26. Vimala (Bimala) Shakti Peeth – Odisha

Sure enough, Vimala Shakti Peeth at number 26 is a very special Shakti Peeth among the others. It is said that the feet of Maa Sati were dropped here. The deity here is worshiped as Maa Bimala, and the temple is situated inside the Jagannath Temple complex in Puri. Already a super special place, you know?

27. Avanti Shakti – Madhya Pradesh

And then, peeth At the 27th position, we have Avanti Shakti Peeth that is situated in the sanctified city of Ujjain. As per the story itself, it is said that the upper lip or elbow of Maa Sati fell here. The goddess is worshipped as Maa Avanti, and Lord Shiva is also known as Lambakarna Bhairav.

28.​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Kalmadhav Shakti Peeth – Madhya Pradesh

Next comes the Kalmadhav Shakti Peeth is quite famous for its tranquil nature and serene atmosphere, and that’s the reason a lot of people visit this specific one. Historically, Sati’s buttocks came down here. People here revere Sati as Maa Kalmadhava, whereas Bhairav is known as Asitananda.

29. Narmada Shakti Peeth – Madhya Pradesh

Why this one’s famous? As per the legend itself, see, it is believed that Maa Sati’s right hip fell at this spot. The deity is venerated as Maa Narmada and Bhairav as Bhadrasen. One of the main reasons why pilgrims go to this shrine is to get spiritual peace and cleansing.

30. Gayatri Manibandh Shakti Peeth – Rajasthan

The wrist parts fell here in Gayatri Manibandh Shakti Peeth, Rajasthan. Worship of the Goddess is done as Maa Gayatri, you know, a figure representing wisdom and knowledge. This shrine itself is just around the Pushkar Lake, which makes it also a special place.

31.​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Ambika Shakti Peeth – Rajasthan

Going down another spot, see, it is the spot where the female leg of Sati is said to have fallen and the presiding goddess is Maa Ambika, with Amriteshwar being Bhairav. To the locals, the temple is the greatest spiritual spot because it is comparatively less crowded and thus more peaceful overall.

32. Amba Shakti Peeth – Gujarat

Ambaji is the place that will let you know the worth of the Amba Shakti Peeth, even if it is ranked 32nd in the list. How and why? When we talk about the Amba Shakti Peeth, we refer to the place where the heart of Sati is said to have fallen. The goddess here is worshipped as Maa Amba and Batuk Bhairav is the Bhairav form.

33. Chandrabhaga Shakti Peeth – Gujarat

Not a single doubt in the fact that Chandrabhaga Shakti Peeth is an equation of both spiritual and historical, which is why it has been given number 33 on the list. The stomach of the deity, Sati, is said to have fallen here, and the goddess is named as Maa Chandrabhaga, with Vakratund as the Bhairav.

34.​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Mahalakshmi Shakti Peeth – Maharashtra

And then, coming at the rank of 34 is Mahalakshmi Shakti Peeth in Kolhapur, which is undoubtedly one of the most potent Shakti Peeths in India. Why? There is a legend that it is here that Sati’s left hand fell down. The lady worshipped is Maa Mahalakshmi, and Kshetra Pal as Bhairav. Besides, this temple is one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas, and thus, it is a matter of great pride.

35. Janasthan Shakti Peeth – Maharashtra

Our list’s 35th entry is Janasthan Shakti Peeth situated in Nashik. Which part fell here then? Oh, it is said that it was the chin of Sati that fell here. The goddess in the temple is Maa Bhramari, and Vikritaksh is the Bhairav. Besides, the association of this Shakti Peeth with the places mentioned in the Ramayana adds to its religious and historical significance, and it makes this place even more unique and special overall.

36. Bhramaramba Shakti Peeth – Andhra Pradesh

One of the reasons why we have given the number 36 to Bhramaramba Shakti Peeth is that it is the only place that has worship of Shakti and Shiva both. Going as per the legend once again, see, it is said that it was Sati’s neck that fell here. The deity worshipped is Maa Bhramaramba, and Mallikarjuna is the Bhairav.

37.​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Sarvashail (Rakini) Shakti Peeth – Andhra Pradesh

One of the reasons 37 Sarvashail Shakti Peeth is highly regarded is because it is thought to be the spot where Sati’s cheek fell. Close to the Godavari River near Rajahmundry, the presiding deity here is Maa Rakini while Vatsanabha is Bhairav.

38. Jogulamba Shakti Peeth – Telangana

The 38th position is held by Jogulamba Shakti Peeth in Alampur which is considered the site where Sati’s upper teeth fell. You see, the divine feminine power that is worshipped here is represented by Maa Jogulamba while Vireswara is the Bhairav. As a matter of fact, this Shakti Peeth forms part of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas, so it is a super special one down there in South India.

39. Kamakshi Amman Shakti Peeth – Tamil Nadu

And then, the 39th position is taken up by Kamakshi Amman Shakti Peeth in Kanchipuram. Somehow, once again, it is said that Sati’s navel fell there. The goddess worshipped is Maa Kamakshi, and Aghora is the Bhairav.

40.​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Suchindram Shakti Peeth – Tamil Nadu

At 40th position in our list is Suchindram Shakti Peeth. This one is super close to Kanyakumari, where the temple is said to be the spot where Sati’s teeth fell. The goddess is Maa Narayani, and Sangharor is the Bhairav.

41. Bhagavathy Amman Shakti Peeth – Tamil Nadu

Once again, this shrine is also pretty close to Kanyakumari, and if we go by the legends, it is believed that the back or spine parts of Maa Sati fell at this very place. The worshipped goddess is Maa Kumari, with Nimish as Bhairav.

42. Guhyeshwari Shakti Peeth – Nepal

See, this one is outside India (well since we’re not exactly talking about Akhand Bharata), it is actually in Nepal. This 42nd Shakti Peeth is located next to the renowned Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu. It is considered the place where Sati’s hips fell. The goddess is Maa Guhyakali, and Kapali is the Bhairav.

43.​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Gandaki Chandi Shakti Peeth – Nepal

Once again in Nepal, see, nNumber 43 on the list, the Gandaki Chandi Shakti Peeth, is the site where Sati’s knees are said to have dropped according to the story. The goddess there is Maa Gandaki Chandi, and Chakrapani is Bhairav, and the temple is down there near Muktinath in the Mustang region.

44. Mithila Shakti Peeth – Bihar

Coming back to India once again, Mithila Shakti Peeth is the 44th Shakti Peeth on the list. It is said that this is a spot in Darbhanga where Sati’s left shoulder fell. Here, the goddess is referred to as Maa Uma, and Bhairav as Mahodar.

45. Bhabanipur Shakti Peeth – Bangladesh

Number 45, Bhabanipur Shakti Peeth, is situated in the district of Bogura in Bangladesh. It is said that an anklet of Sati or possibly her garment fell here. The deity worshipped in this temple is Maa Aparna, and Bhairav is Vaman. This shrine still sees a great inflow of pilgrims who come from the neighboring ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌areas.

46.​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Jeshoreshwari Shakti Peeth – Bangladesh

Once again, talking about a foreign country now (sure, before independence, it used to be part of India), placed at number 46, Jeshoreshwari Shakti Peeth is among the oldest Shakti Peeths in Bangladesh. It lies in Satkhira, where it is believed that Sati’s palm dropped. The divine goddess here is Maa Jeshoreshwari, and Bhairava is Chanda.

47. Sugandha Shakti Peeth – Bangladesh

Staying in Bangladesh once again, see, at number 47, is the Sugandha Shakti Peeth, which is considered to be the spot where Sati’s nose fell. And to be precise about the location, see, it is situated at the Barisal district along the Sugandha River, where the goddess worshipped is Maa Sunanda, and Bhairava is Traimbak.

48. Bhavani Shakti Peeth – Bangladesh

And then, of course, Bhavani Shakti Peeth is our number 48. Based in Chittagong, this shrine is considered to be the place where Sati’s right arm fell. The goddess here is Maa Bhavani, and Bhairava is Chandrashekhar.

49.​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Hinglaj Shakti Peeth – Pakistan

Hinglaj Shakti Peeth in Balochistan is, without any doubt, among the oldest Shakti Peeths. People say that the head of Sati fell at this place. The goddess worshipped here is Maa Hinglaj, and Bhimalochan is considered as Bhairav.

50. Shivaharkaray Shakti Peeth – Pakistan

This is the last one in Pakistan, and it is there in Shivaharkaray Shakti Peeth, where it is believed that Maa Sati’s eyes or the third eye of Sati fell. Maa Mahishasuramardini is the goddess worshipped here, while Ribhuswar is the Bhairav.

51. Nagapooshani Amman Shakti Peeth – Sri Lanka

And the last one, it is in Sri Lanka, to be precise, the temple is known as Nagapooshani Amman Shakti Peeth, and to be precise about the location, see it is present there on the island of Nainativu. It is said that the anklets of Sati fell at this place. Goddess Nagapooshani is the divine mother worshipped here, while Nayinaar is the Bhairav.
